Info on Ottoman ships and guns

Very interesting article on Ottoman ships and guns of the 18th century: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/307653355_Ottoman_Seapower_and_Naval_Technology_during_Catherine_II's_Turkish_Wars_1768-1792 (Click download full-text PDF on the top right) Could be a useful source, as has some examples...

Re: Some info on 17th C Danish ships

Great, here's the link - they are 2 scans of the originals, around 12 pages each. Its in Danish, but some of the important details in the tables have been translated via comments in the PDF - just click on the little yellow boxes. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/55b2tkdv8dl44tg/AADM3nBc2jgzeHGMlubo6y6Fa?...

Some info on 17th C Danish ships

A Danish acquaintance of mine recently scanned some of the ship data tables from the books "Christian IV's flåde" and "Niels Juels Flåde", as well as providing a few translation notes. The lists include tonnages, numbers of crew, numbers of cannons and artillery "effectiveness" (not sure what that i...

Re: Names of English cannons

Thanks Navclio, I've had a look around for that book, but only ones I could find were $300! It seems like the threedecks entries for the English change to "-pdr" after about 1700, so I'll probably choose a conflict around then or after to make the cut off. The ships I looked at still listed "Demi-Cu...

Names of English cannons

When did the English Navy make the transition from "Culverin", "Demi-Culverin", etc. into "18-pdr", "12-pdr", etc. ? So far the entries on threedecks pre-1700 have all been in the named version, rather than the pounds (although the odd 3-pdr, 24-pdr, and 12-pdr). That's as far as I've researched, so...

Re: French ships of the Nine Years War / War of the Grand Alliance

Thanks so much for your detailed reply Navclio - very interesting stuff :) I was talking to someone knowledgeable about this period down at the wargames club today, and I gleaned the following information: Crew Quality for sailing: Dutch > English > French Crew Quality for boarding / fighting: Engli...

French ships of the Nine Years War / War of the Grand Alliance

How did French ships of this era (1688–97)) compare to the English and Dutch ships? they seem to be much larger, but did they handle just as well, were they as fast as their English and Dutch counterparts? I seem to recall French ships being very desirable in later eras, being better sailers than th...

Re: War by Sail

Cheers Cy - I've uploaded it to Dropbox now (and changed the link in the OP), which should be easier to navigate, and automatically previews the PDF for people interested (so you could read it without downloading it)
