Re: Spanish Galleon Info 1572 - 1600
I don’t have a direct response to your question, but possible pointers to where you can find what you are looking for. A brief search turns up two possible books: Galleon: The Great Ships of the Armada Era by Peter Kirsch, and Spanish Galleon 1530-1690 by Angus Konstam and Tony Bryan. The latter is ...

Re: Names of English cannons
At this point, force of habit and no overwhelming need to change. I had thought that it was the succession of George I to the throne, but a deeper dive into the situation does not support the idea. John Churchill became the Master General of the Board of Ordinance upon George’s arrival (he maintaine...

Re: Names of English cannons
Hi, Sorry for the late reply - midterms followed by spring break . . . The change in nomenclature took much longer than you would imagine. It would appear to have started in the First Dutch War. Remember, Charles I had let the navy stagnate at the end of his reign during his fight with Parliament. F...

Re: Reading ship plans/blueprints
Hi, You probably know this already, but Aubry’s Surprise is loosely based on the ship on the draught. The Unite was a French ship captured by the RN and renamed Surprise. They diverge from this point. The Surprise in the movie was built as a (sort of) replica of HMS Rose of 20 guns of the American R...
