Re: Byng's 1755 Channel force

This is the sort of list that Beatson, Naval and Military Memoirs , vol. 3, and Schomberg, Naval Chronology , vol. 4, usually have, but in this case they only include Hawke's fleet earlier in the year. Byng probably had a subset of Hawke's and West's fleet, although some ships might have been ciommi...

Re: Help with a translation

I'm confused about whether you are trying to translate from Spanish to English or the quoted sentence is a Google Translate English version of a Spanish sentence. That information and the rest of the paragraph, the sentences before and after the one quoted, would be helpful.

Re: Galga vs 6 english privateers - help!!!

The National Archives in Kew might have (probably but not certainly has) the captain's journal and the master's log for His Britannic Majesty's ship Hampshire . The Admiralty did not collect logs or journals from privateers, so they would not be in the ADM 51 and 52 series with the warship logs and ...

Re: Henry Digby and Alcmene

The Naval Chronicle was a monthly magazine for British navy officers and members of the public interested in naval affairs. It began publication in 1799 and might have had announcements of command appointments. (A lot of the content was biographies of important officers of earlier times.) There mig...

Re: Galga vs 6 english privateers - help!!!

What is "HERE"?? Dates in Rif Winfield, British Warships in the Age of Sail , are in whatever calendar the British navy was using at that time—the "old style" Julian calendar before 1752. This is true of all British naval records. Keep in mind also that the British naval day was ...

Re: Help with a translation

I tried twice to reply but each time I logged in, wrote a reply, and clicked on "submit" it demanded my username and password AGAIN. If this message appears, I won't know why. I think I could help but I'm not going to write again. Sorry.

Re: Galga vs 6 english privateers - help!!!

Can you post the document or a link to it? I think there is a biography of Galga 's captain, Pedro de Garacochea. I think I have seen other spellings for the name; perhaps he is mentioned in your document. Looking for him might turn up more info about his ship. It will probably be in Spanish. Galga ...

Re: Officering Byng's Ramillies

The captain of another of the ships in Byng's fleet, Thomas Andrews of Defiance , had been killed, creating a cascade of promotions. Captain Hon. Augustus Hervey of 20-gun frigate Phœnix was reassigned to replace him (this was not a promotion in rank, but the transfer to a larger ship entitled him t...

Re: Yet another Victory

This is getting beyond the "Age of Sail." The last HMS Victory in J.J. Colledge, Ships of the Royal Navy: An Historical Index is the three-decked 100-gun first rate ship of the line that served as the flagship of Vice-Admiral Viscount Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. It is still ...
