I'm looking for information of why and when Sir George Rooke and George Hesse-Darmstadt met.
As far as i understand they both sailed towards Barcelona about April/May 1704.
Then in July, the Council of War decided to attack Gibraltar.

Re: Ship Rates
Thanks Navclio for your lengthy explanation. Indeed I have some reading to do both in Winfield & Benders books.

Re: Ship Rates
Hi Navclio, The information i'm looking for is only for the Anglo-Dutch force that attacked and captured Gibraltar in 1704. I have both books by Rif Winfield and James Bender, but yet to read them. Clearly I need to do so quickly! I was assuming that perhaps a First Rate ship (2nd, 3rd etc) had 'x' ...

Ship Rates
May I please ask if there is any source whereby I can tally up a ship Rate with its complement of men (how many) and guns (how many and the types)?
With thanks

Re: Battle for Gibraltar 1704
Thanks for clearing that up, though surely it wasn't to retake that point of land as Gibraltar was then Spanish and poorly defended as the Spanish royalty even then didn't pay much attention to its defenses. Really i'll be directing all my interest in the Anglo-Dutch fleet. I've now downloaded the c...

Battle for Gibraltar 1704
Thanks Navclio. I have now sourced and ordered both those books from Amazon, by Bender and Winfield. The 'battle' as such would be classed as the 'Capture of Gibraltar' by the Anglo-Dutch, in July 1704, allowing for the difference of calendars. I had downloaded W.L.Clowes Vol.1, so i'll now look for...

Battle for Gibraltar 1704
Apologies, i need to rephrase what i'm asking for.
What i would like would be to find detailed information on each ship that took part in that battle.
e.g.
1. Who were the Commanding Officers of each ship and the officers?
2. Plans of these ships.
etc etc.

Re: Battle for Gibraltar 1704
Grammont, that is absolutely fantastic!
I will look into this as soon as possible.
I have also contacted some Dutch museums looking for information from their side.
