New Book - Chesapeake Campaign and Struggle for America

A new naval title of possible interest in the From Reason to Revolution series that I edit: https://www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/crisis-at-the-chesapeake-the-royal-navy-and-the-struggle-for-america-1775-1783.php. From the blurb: By the end of 1780 the war for American independence appeare...

Re: A Catchpenny Conundrum

Thanks, that would seem to be the six in question (I suppose it's just possible that Ardent could be meant to represent the previous ship of that name, lost 1779, if the engraving was very early in the 1780s and/or from an old original). I'm just stumped as to why you'd pick those six - they are non...

Re: Hope all are keeping safe

Thanks for the best wishes Cy. Like you, Lucy and I seem to have had the mild version and were laid up for a fortnight but are fully recovered now. Working from home, which means that the garden has never looked better!

Stay safe all.

Best Wishes, Andrew

War of 1812 Single-Ship Actions

Another new naval title from the Helion series that I edit. This one looks at the single-ship clashes of the War of 1812, with a particular focus on the way that they were perceived at the time and how this affected future naval policy: https://www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/revenge-in-the-...

A Catchpenny Conundrum

My wife is an art historian, and has come across a catchpenny print with engravings of six 18th century British warships, from a series published during the 1780s and 1790s. They are fairly crude images, certainly not meant to be accurate ship-portraits, but they are named as Prudent, Marlborough, S...

Russian Fleet in the Mediterranean

As well as Cy's new book on Royal navy officers, today at Helion we've also released this title covering the operations of the Russian fleet under Senyavin between 1805 and 1810: https://www.helion.co.uk/military-history-books/northern-tars-in-southern-waters-the-russian-fleet-in-the-mediterranean-1...

Re: French Brest Fleet 1744

Just one query, working this up, is there an error in the dating for the Content leaving? If detached on the 8/19th, she couldn't have been at Dungeness as indicated. I'm also now confused by the dating off the encounter off Dungeness, which from the sources - granted, secondary and not naval in foc...

Re: French Brest Fleet 1744

Thanks both, that's perfect. I'm writing primarily about the French military involvement in the '45, but the invasion plan is background and I thought it would be useful to provide a listing of Roquefeuil’s fleet since I hadn't seen one in print before. I'll leave it to Albert to tell the detailed s...

French Brest Fleet 1744

I am trying to compile a list of the ships that sailed from Brest under de Roquefeuil as part of the abortive 1744 invasion of Britain which would have employed Charles Edward Stuart as a figurehead. I found a list on the Nafziger collection of orders of battle, derived in turn from Schomberg's Nava...

Re: Blockade of Brest - New Book

The 1740s title is still in the conceptual stage at the moment, so until I get more details from the prospective author the honest answer to those questions, at least so far as focus and sources are concerned, is "I don't know"! We'd be looking at a late-2019 release for that one, so I'll ...
