Re: 1778-79 English 9-Pounder carriage.

Good evening,
I am looking in which archive I could find the list of guns received or placed on a ship, knowing its number, year of manufacture, caliber and length :

6ft 9-pounder, Carron (Falkirk) 1778 number 982 ...

Re: Ship called Leostoff in 1760

According to me, the name is the right one...

"Before QUEBEC from 8th MAY, 1759, to 17th MAY, 1760. Kept by colonel... The Leostoff 30 frigate and Hunter sloop of war attempted to sail past the..."

1778-79 English 9-Pounder carriage.

Hello, I am looking for the detailed plan of the carriage of an English 9-pounder iron gun, 7 feet long. I consulted several books but I did not find a detailed plan. For the moment, I could not find Volume II (1997) of Adrian Caruana's books in a library: The History of English Sea Ordnance . Do yo...

Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

Thank you very much Navclio! I absolutely share your opinion on the non-use of the English flag (red cross on white) as a sign of recognition during an attack in the period under review. Likewise, I do not think that the corsairs of Guernsey used the specific flag of the bailiff. In the report I quo...

Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

There is a "famous" painting of Jersey Privateer Pitt flying an upside down "Union flag" (red with the large canton). I know neither the artist nor the current location of the painting : http://doug-jersey.freeservers.com/18th%20century.htm The flag upside down could be a signal ...

Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

From an English or a British point of view, I agree.
From a French point of view, I am not so sure... I guess that for most French sailors in 1779-1782, "an English Flag" is a flag with the Union Jack.

Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

I think it's a bit more complex. The 1694 instructions state a Cross of St George (Red cross on white background) at the masthead. The Red Ensign, which would be carried at the stern. The distinguishing jack, a Jack being specifically a flag carried at the bow, on the jack staff which was carried a...

Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

The study of accounts and reports of combat at sea shows that privateers generally do not fly any flag or that they fly the enemy flag in order to get closer to their prey. At the last moment, they hoist their real flag (and it alone) and I think it was done on a yard halyard towards the stern (from...
