Re: Working out weapon facings of 16th century Galleons

I'm guessing those 2 cannon of 7 would be stern chasers. Definitely a guess, and given the general tactics of the Armada period my guess would be bow chasers, although for the sailing balance of the ship might have actually been on the broadside. We'll probably never know. As for Spanish galleons I...

Re: Working out weapon facings of 16th century Galleons

Of course, you also have to be aware that gun lists change from time to time, especially during the seventeenth century. For example Three Decks has four different ordanance lists for the Elizabeth Bonaventure between 1567 and 1588. The one you quote matches that for 17th July 1585, unfortunately th...

The reference on Kronoskaf is in the campaigns section

http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=1757_-_British_operations_in_the_Mediterranean

Looking at it now seems to be almost verbatim from Clowes.

Re: Action of 5th April 1757

Hi Navclio Thanks for the French references. Yes, Saunders had sailed out of Gibraltar on April 2nd to intercept. The original source for the British vessels is the Seven Years War project at http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=Main_Page which is as reliable as many and reasonably well rese...

Action of 5th April 1757

On this date a British squadron of 5 ships under Charles Saunders engaged, briefly, a squadron of French ships out of Toulon under M. de Revest. This French squadron later reinforced Louisbourg. Does anyone know the vessels involved on the French side, the British can be seen here https://threedecks...

Sir Harry Heron Bart. d.1817

I am struggling to find any family information on this officer. https://threedecks.org/index.php?display_type=show_crewman&id=8414 His commission of 1762 refers to him as 'Sir Harry Heron', which indicates a noble family, and when superannuated as a rear-admiral in 1804 was referred to as a baronet....

Re: Captain James Wallace RN (or maybe not)

Hi Navclio

Certainly not a Captain at Copenhagen, and none of the potential candidates were a captain until 1817. Being born c.1755 means he would have been 43 in 1798 when the first possible lieutenant was commissioned, old but not unheard of.

If he's in Syrett and DiNardo he's also on Three Decks.
