Re: Guernsey Privateers circa 1779-1782

In the 18th century, the French routinely referred to subjects and warships of the Kingdom of Great Britain as "anglais." In reading French naval history and 18th century French naval records, I don't think I've ever seen a reference to "vaisseaux britanniques," "la marine b...

Re: Royal Navy Marines

According to Brian Lavery, Nelson's Navy (Conway Maritime Press and U.S. Naval Institute Press, 1989), p. 87, "The [British war]ship's muskets, including those of the marines, were under the care of the gunner, and were repaired by his assistant, the armourer. Around 1790, a 74-gun ship carried...

Re: Identifying ship models

I probably shouldn't post his e-mail address here but if you will send your e-mail address and the picture to navclio (at) cox (dot) net, I can ask Eduard Sozaev, co-author of Russian Warships in the Age of Sail, if he knows what ship or class that would be.

Re: Need information on HMS Wolf- 1731-1741

It's quite possible that the "Caicos Bank" location is simply wrong. Contemporary documents and news reports, and the histories based on them, often locate an incident—a battle, a capture of an enemy vessel or privateer, etc.—as being "off" the last landmark seen by the ship or t...

Re: Need information on HMS Wolf- 1731-1741

Rif Winfield's sources for operations and losses were, as far as I know, Admiralty records—a sheet or card for each ship with brief statements of actions, etc. The locations could be quite far off, at least in the 1740s. Incidents listed as "in the Channel" might be well out into the Bay o...

Re: Danish warships Paint schemes

I don't know what you mean by "such battle accounts," since none have been mentioned in this thread. Naval battles involving the Danish navy are described in English in R[oger] C[harles] Anderson, Naval Wars in the Baltic during the Sailing-Ship Epoch, 1522–1850 (London: G. Gilbert-Wood, 1...

Try http://www.sailingwarships.com/ (accessed October 5, 2008), under “Denmark-Norway,” “Denmark-Norway Pictures” for a painting of SOL Odin of 1788. That's he only Danish warship picture in my collection. Keep in mind that paintings might or might not show the actual colors. If the artist saw the s...

Re: Types of French ships during the Seven Years' War

80s would have to be longer than 74s and 74s would have to be longer than 64s. Perhaps by "long keel" and "short keel" you mean within a particular gun rating. Directories of French warships in this time period would tell you the name of the designer and the date of construction....

Re: Le Conquerant

It's not clear well, to me, anyway) what you're asking. Do you know this Marine's name? Do you know what ship he was serving in before being assigned to Conquérant 's prize crew? If you know those, he would be in his "home" ship's muster book. Conquérant was an old ship, condemned at Toulo...

Re: Russian Fleet in the Mediterranean

Senyavin deserves to be better known outside Russia. The British navy was not the only successful navy of the FRAN wars. The sneers of nastily hyperchauvinistic British officers (Collingwood: Senyavin's victory at Athos or Lemnos was "a sort of a battle"; the ineffectual Duckworth, rejecti...
