Where a record shows a date of commission and a confirmed date, this is information is usually taken from the ADM 6 commissioning records. Yes, in the army you could buy a commission, with no experience. That couldn't happen in the navy, you had to have had 6 years sea service, at least 2 as a midshipman or master's mate, and be at least 20 years of age (in theory) to even take the lieutenant's exam, which was no guarantee of receiving...

Three Decks has at least some records for 99% plus of all RN commissioned officers 1660-1815 and I have no records of an officer that would match. It is possible that he served as an acting lieutenant, but would usually have to have passed his lieutenants exam for that to be the case, and, again, I ...

I have recieved the following request for information, can anyone help?

"I am tiring to find any information on the half galleys that were sent from Havana to St.Augustine in during the siege of 1740. Did the galley have names? Are their any drawings or paintings?

OK, You win. I've changed Hervey's commission for the Hampton court dated 15th May 1756 to show as never enacted upon, and changed the display of actions so it takes into account the date the officer went on board, if available, so it ignores John Knight's commission to the Phoenix dated 8th May 175...

The flag of England is the Cross of St George. I would assume that is what is meant
