Actually we (talking as a site editor) already have a way of doing it, as editors can create fleets and they don't have to be for specific actions. Therefore it would be (if we had the info) quite possible to create a listing for the Royal Navy Squadron at Newfoundland 1775, say, the problem being, ...

The Ancient Port of Whitby and its Shipping includes a catalogue of Whitby built ships and quite a few of them are listed as being transports at some point, particularly in 1814.

I'm trying to add the details of the captain of a Brazilian merchant ship but all the ranks available (in Portuguese) appear to be for naval use rather than civilian use. Is there a specific title used in Portuguese for the captain of a civilian ship?

Biographia navalis has Peter Chamberlain as commanding officer of the Spy brigantine in August 1703. When he is promoted to Captain on 1703/08/13 he also appointed captain of the Orford Prize, a small frigate, recently taken by John Norris.
