Re: Working out weapon facings of 16th century Galleons

If you have not seen it already, you might want to consult John F. Guilmartin, Jr. "The Guns of the Santíssimo Sacramento" at http://www.angelfire.com/ga4/guilmartin.com/Santissimo.html This is about a Portuguese galleon lost off the coast of Brazil in 1668 and explored by Brazilian navy d...

Re: Images on ship pages?

That would be a huge job for Cy! If you want to undertake modeling a sail-era warship, a good place to start would be the "Anatomy of the Ship" series of books. They were originally published by Conway Maritime Press and in the U.S. by the Naval Institute Press and are probably out of prin...

Re: Working out weapon facings of 16th century Galleons

Demi-Saker, as I said, I don't know anything specific about 16th-century artillery, naval or military; the Anglo-Dutch wars are as far back as my naval history library extends (except for Mattingly, The Armada ), so I was using 17th century artillery as an example of a possible extreme combination o...

Re: Working out weapon facings of 16th century Galleons

I don't have any specialized knowledge about these very early sail-era warships, but I would bet that when they had two gun types with an odd number of each, that was because they simply did not have enough of one of them (probably the larger) to put the same number on each broadside, and they had t...

Re: USS Hornet - when did it founder in 1829?

Note that the report by the officer sent to investigate the disappearance of Hornet only reports that she was "driven from her moorings . . . on the 10th of September last, since which time there has been no tidings of her." In other words, she disappeared, no one knew what happened to her...

Sorry, https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/cb32780022t/date is for the Paris Gazette , and they do have all 53 issues from 1757. Le Courrier (Avignon) is at http://www.gazettes18e.fr/courrier-avignon; click on "Consulter la gazette." The Leiden gazette is at http://www.gazettes18e.fr/gazette...

Re: Action of 5th April 1757

Yes, well, there is a lot of that going around these days.☺ I don't want to research this further myself, but if you want more details from the French side (the obvious British source is the captains' journals and any report by Saunders in the admirals' in-letters), here are some suggestions: La Cou...

Re: Action of 5th April 1757

No longer any sign of Saunders vs. du Revest at kronoskaf: nothing under "Battles" for 1757, nothing on the "navies" page, no reference to du Revest on the officers or commanders page. If you want more details of the action, and Google the three search terms "Saunders" ...

Re: Action of 5th April 1757

It turns out that all Guérin says (vol. IV, p. 360) is that du Revest joined du Bois de la Motte at Louisbourg “malgé l’opposition d’une escadre ennemie. Ce dernier [du Revest], attaqué, à l’entrée du détroit de Gibraltar, par une escadre de cinq vaisseaux, commandée par l’amiral Saunders, avait for...

Re: Action of 5th April 1757

Actually, on the next page Troude does have an account of an encounter on April 5 in the Strait of Gibraltar between du Revest and Saunders with Culloden, Berwick, Princess Louisa, Portland, and Guernsey . My experience with the preceding war is that everybody got what the other guys were doing or w...
