The Royal Navy ship Carlisle blew up off the Downs on 1700/09/19 and there were no survivors. The captain at this date is shown to be Francis Dove, but he captained numerous ships after this date so obviously wasn't killed. Was he just not on board when the explosion took place?

I don't know the details, but clearly not lost with the ship. He was court martialed and acquited for the loss on 27 September 1700.
ADM 1/5261/157

Several sources refer to him being ashore at the time of the explosion, while all those on board perished.

It appears that Dove and four other commanding officers were court-martialed after the Battle of Malaga for their actions during the battle and they were all acquitted.

The TNA catalogue unfortunately doesn't list courts martai individually for 1705
