Hi there,
For my thesis I am transcribing a journal from the early 19th century.
In 1809, the author mentions having visited Plymouth Dock and having been introduced to "General England". Unfortunately, my knowledge of officers of the Royal Navy is limited and his last name does not lend itself for easy Googling.
Is there anyone who might be able to help me find out more about this General England so I can write an annotation?
Who is "General England" Royal Navy 1809
Re: Who is "General England" Royal Navy 1809
Hi
There was a Thomas England in the Royal Navy at that time, but he was a Lieutenant in 1809. see https://threedecks.org/index.php?displa ... an&id=6365. He is the only Royal Navy officer with that surname in that year.
Another consideration is that General is not a Royal Navy rank. It is probable that the officer in question is actually Richard England https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_E ... died_1812). He was Lieutenant-Governor of Plymouth from 1803 until 1812.
