Who was on board the Antelope with Byng?

Post by jon_ystrad »

The Antelope was sent out to Gibraltar after the Battle of Minorca to bring back Admirals Byng and West, and their flagships' officers, for the enquiry into the battle and its aftermath.

There was a parallel army enquiry into the army officers' part in councils of war, and what advice they gave Byng regarding the relief of Minorca.

I have read that the Antelope had "44 passengers" aboard her on her return - these would have been Byng and West, their captains, and probably lieutenants down to 5th.

This leaves another 30 or so - were these the army officers? If so, is there a full passenger manifest somewhere that can be accessed to see just who was on board? Effingham and his furloughed officers? The officers of the regiment that had been acting as Marines?

Any help appreciated, thank you
