HMS Kite Cutter/Sloop 1795-1805

Post by Prussian »

My ancestor Charles MARTIN book number 70 served on Kite from about 1795 to 1805 when he was transferred to Achille and served at Trafalgar.

Vice-admiral Horatio Nelson was aboard 16-gun HMS Kite (for passage home only) in June 1801 following the Battle of Copenhagen. Source: The Nelson Encyclopaedia by Colin White

Looking for image of Kite, please.

Admiralty (ADM) records at The National Archives, Kew say a Cutter (e.g. ADM 35/927) and Sloop (e.g. 36/13478). Which is it?

Simple answer is both. There were three Kites during the period all detailed on Three Decks. The 1st a 10-gun cutter was broken up in 1793, replaced in 1795 by an 18 gun brig-sloop, which was itself replaced in 1805 by a 16-gun brig-sloop.
Hooe that helps
OK, it was me, probably!
