British sailing ships for Greece 1825?

Post by AvM » Sun May 20, 2018 6:23 am

York Herald - Saturday 15 October 1825

Previously to the issuing of the Proclamation, regarding Englishmen rendering assistance to the Greeks, several fine vessels were lying off Gravesend, well known to be fining out for the purpose of em- baking in the Greek contest. They were there up- wards of three weeks. One was formerly an East In diaman ; she has been lengthened 15 feet, and fitted up as, and makes a complete man of war. Another ot the vessels had been built for Lord Harborough ; she has been converted into an excellent and formidable man of war brig. All the vessels have moved off for Greece. and they are described as being well calculated for service.

The Karteria (Endurance), previously the Perseverance, the first steam powered vessel to actually see action, was built for the Greek Revolutionary Navy at the Brent Shipyard, Deptford in 1825.

We have already discussed KARTERIA here!

I am interesting if the sailing ships mentioned in the article were really prepared for Greece?

One would think they were. Is there something in there that makes you doubt that, AvM?

I am nearly sure thatthese ships were sold to South America.
Ships participated in the Greeks War for Independence are relatively good known,
and there was onyl one frigate HELLAS built in USA.
