Another area of Naval Sevice that is largely neglected. Used to carry troops and equipment they were hired by the transport board between 1690 and 1724, and again between 1794 and 1817. The rest of the time by the admiralty.
If anyone has information on hired transports at any time I would be interested. Threedecks only has 17 RN hired transports listed, there will have been a vast number more.

The failed attempt to take Rochefort in 1757 led to an official inquiry and the resulting report included a list of transports used:
