Hired Transports

Post by Cy »

Another area of Naval Sevice that is largely neglected. Used to carry troops and equipment they were hired by the transport board between 1690 and 1724, and again between 1794 and 1817. The rest of the time by the admiralty.

If anyone has information on hired transports at any time I would be interested. Threedecks only has 17 RN hired transports listed, there will have been a vast number more.
OK, it was me, probably!

The failed attempt to take Rochefort in 1757 led to an official inquiry and the resulting report included a list of transports used:

A 1982 university thesis entitled A MARITIME HISTORY OF THE PORT OF WHITBY, 1700-1914 includes a list of Whitby built/owned transports extracted from TNA records:

Further details of the vessels should be listed in 'The ancient port of Whitby and its shipping, with some subjects of interest connected therewith. Compiled from various registers of shipping, periodicals, local newspapers and histories, etc'

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id= ... =2up;seq=6

as it includes a catalogue of Whitby vessels.
