Prince Royal (1610)

Prince Royal (renamed Resolution under the Commonwealth) was orginally rigged with four masts but appears to have definitely had three by the time of the First Dutch War (1652-1654). I cannot see any specific reference to the date of rerigging in the usual sources for this period. The ship was rebuilt several times during its career which might have been the occasion: 1621, 1641 and 1663.

Does anyone know when Prince Royal was rerigged with three masts?

The much bigger Sovereign of the Seas was built in 1637 with only three masts so the fourth mast (bonaventure mast) had evidently been abandoned by then.

I looked at my sources out of curiosity to see if I could see any note of when she lost the bonaventure mizzen. Nothing found. However, it MUST be the 1641 date because they were obsolete by that time and no one was building them that way anymore. Yes she was renamed Resolution during the Interegnum/Cromwell's rule - but then at the Restoration rechristened Royal Prince. Van de Velde's drawings of her are from after her final rebuild. He witnessed her destruction when the Dutch burned her - after her capture on day 3 of the Four Days Fight of 1666. Those are the last images of her I know of. I don't believe there are existing images of her from the Interegnum period. At least I've never found any and I am pretty gaga for ship images. I have one of the largest archives of albums of sailing ships online with over 4.2 million views.

Thanks Aaron. I think 1641 is the most likely date too. The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, has an image online you might be interested in: BHC0276. It is the Battle of the Gabbard by Heerman Witmont. A Dutch and English ship are in action in the foreground. According to the museum's description the English ship is Resolution (ex Prince Royal). The ship appears to be a three-decker so can only be Resolution. Sovereign (ex Sovereign of the Seas) did not fight in any battle of First Anglo-Dutch War after running aground at Kentish Knock.

Go to https://collections.rmg.co.uk/collectio ... Id=BHC0276

I have also been searching for images of Sovereign from the same era (1649-1660). Do you know of any?

Thanks too for the van de Velde drawings. Fabulous!

John

To view the picture you have to copy the URL and post it into your browser. I am not sure why you cannot just click on the address.

This isn't a modeling site and has very few correspondents, so you are not likely to get any other response. You would be better served by looking for dedicated ship modeling sites and asking there.

Dear readers and ship lovers
I have seen the beautiful model of this ship, in the Greenwich museum, this summer.
I'd really like to build the ship model PRINCE ROYAL ( 1610 )
For this reason I kindly ask you for help, please HELP ME find the plan of this beautiful ship.
---Maybe some of the readers have this plan, and maybe he would be kind enough to TELL ME where he bought it, or maybe he would be kind enough to make me a COPY.
Unfortunately at the museum I have already written and it seems that they have the model but not the plan.
The model shown is very detailed and precise, for this reason, in my opinion the model manufacturer also had a good plan.
Thanks in advance for your collaboration.
Best regards ,Hudson Bay

Dear Hudson Bay,

Information on the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, website indicates that the model was made by a private model maker which would explain why the museum does not have a plan. To locate a plan or others with your interest the website 'Model Ship World' might be a good place to start. The web address is https://modelshipworld.com
