Possible ship name in port of Genoa 1815

Post by fstevens39 »

Hi all
I'm not sure if anyone is able to help with this but you never know.
I have an ancestor that claims to have been born in Genoa in 1815, more precisely on the Mole of Genoa. On the 1861 census there is a word I have been unable to decipher. It has been suggested that it may be the name of a British ship that was docked in the port as there was a British presence in Genoa at that time. I have attached a clip of the section of the census page with the words in question. Apologies from a newbie this is the wrong section to post in.
Regards
Fred

Hi Fred,

The writing is good for what there is to see. Can you give a more concrete date? When is the notation from? We could look in the newspapers about merchant ships in Genoa at that time.

Best regards,
Andreu

Hi Andreu
The clipping is from the 1861 England census. By this time Joseph was a sawmaker living and working in London. He was in London from at least 1841 as he was on the 1841 census.
His age as given on the censuses related to him being born in 1815, but that is as much as I know. On 1851, 1861 and 1871 census his birthplace is shown as Italy, and Genoa in Italy, and in 1861 as shown. Mole of Genoa, with a name of a ship or location on the Mole.
I have looked on maps and gazetteers but have been unable to relate the word to a place, so am now looking for a possible ship.

Hi Fred,

Have you checked if there are any words written in a similar way in the census?

Andreu

Hi Andreu
Thanks for taking an interest.
It's the enumerators handwriting that is causing the problem. Even his capital letters vary from word to word. I've even looked at othe pages he has completed . I can post the entire page if that would help or is allowed.
It has been variously seen as Pernerinto. Pornerinto, Permerinto Pernecsciuto etc but finding what it pertains to, ship or location etc has so far been fruitless.

Hi Fred,

I have a theory ... its resemblance to "nasciuto". In Italian born.

Andreu

Hi Andreu
Good theory, but being on an English census I'm not sure anything would be in Italian. I need to find his birth record somewhere.

Although thinking about it, if my ancestor was in fact Italian, could he have written "born - nasciuto" on the original return, and the enumerator made it into one word.
