Amistad

Post by Grammont »

I've found a Colombian newspaper listing of Spanish ships taken by Colombian privateers in 1823-24

https://books.google.co.uk/books?id=tM0 ... la&f=false

and the 9th ship listed is a brig called Armistad. Is there any possibility of this being the same ship as the slaver? How easy/difficult would it have been to convert a brig into a schooner which the slaver was?

The history of the slaver is very vague before the slave insurrection with nobody even sure where it was built and when, yet here we have a Spanish ship with the same name, operating in the same geographical area 15 years earlier. Admittedly Armistad means 'friendship' in English so it is possible there could have been more than one ship of that name.
