Explanation
1st entry is % of gunnery effectiveness. It is ONLY used if an alternative method to the National Gunnery Chart is used.* (Where an A is listed, it stands for Automatic. In other words, player may proceed to the Main Gunnery Chart, without concerning himself with rolling on the Nationality Gunnery Chart.)
2nd entry is the number needed to be rolled to qualify each die to roll again on Main Gunnery Chart. (Example- With a broadside of 5.8, Belle Poule (French Royal Navy) would need to roll five d20s of the same color and one d20 of a different color, as well as one d10. If she rolled at least four or better on the d20s, that qualifies said dice for rolling on the Main Gunnery Chart. The .8, if she rolled 1-8 on the d10, would qualify her to throw another d20 on the Main Gunnery Chart.)
3rd entry is the number needed to roll on decimal dice to qualify for Main Gunnery Chart, if previous number to 2nd entry number is rolled. (Example: A Swedish ship, from 1803, rolls its dice and one or more is a score of 10, instead of 11. Swedish commander can roll percentage dice to try to qualify that 10 for an 11. If he rolls 28 or more, that qualifies that die to be an 11, and it may be rolled with the others on the Main Gunnery Chart. If he rolls less than 28, the die still counts as a 10 and can’t be used on the Main Gunnery Chart.
* If a player wanted to skip using the Nationality Gunnery Chart, he could choose another method. This would entail multiplying the number in column one by the broadside value of the ship to be used. (Example: The Belle Poule has a broadside value of 5.8. Keeping 5.8 would mean having to roll on the NGC every turn she wished to fire. To get around this, the player would multiply .8767 times 5.8. The result would be rounded off to 5.08. That would mean that five d20s could be rolled on the Main Gunnery Chart every time Belle Poule fired. The .08 would be handled like this- the controlling player could simply throw a pair of decimal dice. If 1-8 came up on that throw, the .08 would count as a full die to be rolled on the Main Gunnery Chart. 9-100 would leave the .08 out of the equation, and the French player would roll just five d20s on the Main Gunnery Chart.)
It’s purely up to the controlling player if he wants to gamble with the NGC or cut time by accepting the automatic loss of some of the broadside.
