Hello,
The Royal Museum Greenwich has hundreds of portraits with ships in the background. I am looking at the portrait of Samuel Hood by Wollaston, and was wondering if anyone could talk me through the identification process. I'd post a link, but I believe the administrators view links as spam.
Any advice would be most helpful.
Thanks.
How to identify ships in pictures
Re: How to identify ships in pictures
I don't mind links, provided they are relevant.
OK, it was me, probably!

My initial query to this board—with the link—was identified by your site as spam and got my ISP banned by the board. I had to reregister from another location. I hesitate to try again.

Send be the link, email on homepage of main site, an I'll add it for you. It won't dare ban me

A very detailed and beautiful painting by Christian Mølsted of the capture of the remaining ships of the danish fleet by the british in 1807:

Comparing the visible carvings and figureheads with the original plans on this site

I am almost 100% sure that the leading ship in the right foreground is the "Tre Kroner". The ship in the left foreground seems to be the "Jylland" (the carvings are very close to the ones in the plans, also the general styling of the stern fits to this old ship)......but actually "Jylland" was not a part of the captured ships. It seems that its last service was back in 1801 at the first battle of Copenhagen: https://threedecks.org/index.php?displa ... hip&id=759
Do you agree so far? Other ideas? And what about the other ships in the painting?
